Annual Sale

Friday, October 2, 2010 the Barclay College Ladies Auxiliary will host its 79th annual auction and sale. This event is always one of the highlights of the college year. Hundreds of friends and alumni from around the world return to Haviland for this annual event.This is also one of the largest fundraisers for the college. Last year over $65,000 was raised to support the mission of Barclay College. As a private not for profit institution of higher education the college relies on financial support to fulfill its mission of preparing students in a Bible-centered environment for effective Christian life, service, and leadership. It is only through the generous support of many that the college is able to carry out its calling. This year’s goal is $75,000.
Each year the dedicated ladies of the college auxiliary spend numerous hours preparing for and working at the sale. This small group has a huge impact on the students and staff of Barclay. On sale day dozens of others including John Hamm and his staff at Hamm Auctioneers help to pull off this all day event. Hundreds of items are brought for sale with many selling for higher than retail value. The greatest anticipation is for the sale of quilts at 1:00p.m. These always generate the highest buzz with many selling for several thousand dollars.
Again this year, the alumni soccer game will be held Friday prior to the sale. Everyone is invited to watch former soccer players battle it out with the current squad. A special addition this year is the tailgate party and alumni association barbeque fundraiser.
Barclay College invites all alumni and friends to be in Haviland for this fantastic weekend of fellowship and fun.

This six-(eight) week course provides orientation and content designed to initiate, explore, and develop the discussion, inspire research and foster implementation of The Blessing. What is The Blessing? It is a life-changing gift which the Bible actually refers to as “the blessing.” It is the unconditional love and approval that comes from parents and other influential individuals in a person’s life. Many spend a lifetime seeking this acceptance, which is vital to self-esteem and emotional well-being. Experiencing The Blessing enables us to pass that approval on to our children, spouses, parents, co-workers and friends.
The mission of The Blessing is to not only minister to traditional families but to also reach today’s blended, special needs, single parent, intergenerational, cross-cultural and pastors’ families. This course will provide tools and training for ministry within the family, the Church, and the community, both locally and beyond. It is all about learning to reverse the curse and live out The Blessings of God and helping others to do the same.

On July 1st Dr. Royce Frazier assumed his position as president of Barclay College. Dr. Frazier previously served as Vice President for Academic Affairs. As a 1975 graduate, he brings a passion and vision for the future of Barclay College to his new role.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Barclay, formerly known as Friends Bible College, Frazier went on to earn an additional bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University, master’s degrees from Friends University and Fielding Graduate University, then a Ph. D. from Fielding in Psychology. Dr. Frazier brings a wealth of educational and practical experience to Barclay College. He has worked previously in youth ministry administration and his own counseling practice.
When asked about accepting his new position, Dr. Frazier said, “it was a difficult decision because I really enjoy my current position as V.P. for Academic Services. However,…I sought the Lord on this matter and we found my passion for Barclay College reaches not only to academics but also to an overarching vision for the institution and a hope for its future.” During his time at Barclay, Frazier has directed the creation and advancement of online degree programs and renewed the working adult degree completion program.
Dr. Frazier said, “My vision for Barclay College is that we find where God is moving and meet Him there. I see Barclay College poised to add new degree programs that we need to pursue. I see it poised to complete the regional accreditation. I see it poised to initiate a new graduate school. Interestingly, God has already been opening these doors and we have to work hard to keep up with His movement on our campus. God’s finger-prints on this institution continue to be evident.” Regarding the appointment of Dr. Frazier, board of trustees chairman Trent Jacks said, “Royce is well connected to our constituency. He has shown strong leadership skills.” Inaugural festivities will take place October 8-10, with the inaugural ceremony on October 9th.
Barclay College is the only four year higher education institution in southwest Kansas. Since 1917 it has been fulfilling its mission of preparing students in a Bible-centered environment for effective Christian life, service, and leadership. With Dr. Frazier’s leadership it is poised for many more years of ministry.
Dr. Tony Wheeler will be the main speaker. Dr. Wheeler has spoken at events across North America for StongFamilies.com. “This will be a chance for people to come together locally to strengthen and revive the marriages in Kiowa County,” said Steve Teter, V.P. for Institutional Advancement at Barclay College. Teter said, “We see a real need for families to experience a quality marriage seminar without driving to Wichita or Kansas City, with the Institute for the Blessing, it provides us resources locally to make a positive impact on marriage and families.”
Dr. Wheeler has a Ph.D. in Family Life Education and Consultation from Kansas State University and is the Executive Director of the Dr. John Trent Institute for the Blessing @ Barclay College. Dr. Wheeler said “being a blessing to your spouse and family is not a one day event, it is a lifestyle. This event will give people tools to live out that blessing in their home and community.” Dr. Wheeler added, “Families want to be a blessing to each other, but sometimes may not know how to live that out, we want to partner with them to show them how.”

Over the first five months of the year the advancement department asked friends and alumni of the college to send in notes of remembrance and financial gifts in honor of Herb’s commitment to the college. The outpouring of support was overwhelming. At the banquet Herb and Shirley were presented with a symbol of recognition from board of trustees representative, Marjorie Thompson, as well as a book containing the notes from friends and a promo-tional check for the amount of gifts that had been given. The amount given to Barclay College in Herb’s honor has increased since the banquet. It is currently at $22,747.00. Herb has designated that those funds be used to update the college’s vehicles. All current vehicles have over 170,000 miles. Herb stated, “What a blessing! Since our faculty and staff travel to so many functions for the college, this is a great opportunity to make sure they can travel safely and reliably.” Any remaining funds will be used for the new residence hall. After the banquet, the board of trustees hosted a reception for Herb and Shirley in the Broadhurst Student Center. “It was a great evening, I am so humbled. The friends and alumni of Barclay have always been so generous in their support and I thank them for it.” Herb said.
Trent Jacks, Chairman of the Board for Barclay, accepted the award and thanked those attending for the recognition. Jacks shared that Barclay has significantly increased the number of students attending the college and has recently begun construction of a new residence hall.
This was a great opportunity to share with the local community the great things the Lord is doing at Barclay. The college is very appreciative of the chamber’s recognition for the important part that Barclay plays in the economic and spiritual development of Kiowa County. Currently, with its work study programs, Barclay College is the largest employer in the county. The college continues to provide support for the rebuilding efforts in Kiowa County; including providing housing to volunteers during the summer and making meeting facilities available as needed.
This award is another example that Barclay College is the “Lighthouse On The Prairies”, in Haviland, Kiowa County, Kansas, and beyond.
Work on grading and site preparation for the new residence hall started in late March. President Herb Frazier said, “this new project will allow us to bring all resident hall students on campus.” This year three off-campus facilities were used to house the overflow of male students. President Frazier continued “we anticipate enrollment to continue to climb, prompting the need for this building now.” Crossland construction has been selected as the general contractor for the residence hall. A 62 bed, two story facility is planned. Tad Johnson, Project Manager for Crossland, commented on the project, “We are privileged to be a part of this project! We consider it an honor to partner with Barclay College and construct a facility that will have a lifelong impact to the campus. While construction has just started, we can hardly wait to turn this over to the school and witness the long term benefits this project will bring.” Johnson is hopeful the project will be completed by Mid-August in time for students to move in.
Due to the wet spring in Haviland suitable fill dirt was difficult to find for the grading of the residence hall. The Lord led administrators to using soil from the parking lot behind Phillips Hall, which removed the need for a retaining wall for the new parking area, saving the college considerable expense. Please pray for a speedy and quality completion of this project. Photos of the process are included on page 2 of this month’s Bulletin.
In their first game Thursday night, the Bears defeated #4 Free Will Baptist Bible College from Nashville, TN 89-6. The Bears outrebounded the Flames 49-31 with all five starters scoring in double figures.
Friday night the Bears faced the #1 seeded Tigers from Champion Baptist College of Hot Springs, AR. After struggling from the line all night, the Bears ended up losing the game 58-68.
Saturday afternoon, the Bears squared off against Emmaus Bible College from Dubuque, IA. In spite of great 3-point shooting by Emmaus, the Bears created 17 turnovers and outrebounded Emmaus by 10. With three starters scoring in double figures, the Bears earned the 3rd place trophy, defeating the Eagles 71-65.
Junior Trent Mullikin (LeGrand, IA) was named Honorable Mention All-American and Academic All-American. He averaged 19.7 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game for the tournament and made the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Shane Brown (Indianapolis, IN) averaged 18.4 points per game while sophomore Philip Ireland (Fairfield, TX) averaged a double-double with 10 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. The Bears finished the season with an overall record of 16-13.

Barclay's 16th President

One Choice Marriage Seminar

The Kiowa County Ministerial Alliance and Barclay College will host “The Choice” a marriage seminar presented by The Dr. John Trent Institute for the Blessing @ Barclay College. The seminar will be held on the Barclay College campus in Haviland July 24th from 9:00 to 5:00 with a special couple’s dinner from 5:30 to 7:00. The seminar will focus on allowing families to live a lifestyle of blessing.Dr. Tony Wheeler will be the main speaker. Dr. Herb Frazier Honored

The conclusion of the alumni banquet was marked with a presentation to honor Herb and Shirley Frazier’s service and dedication to Barclay College. Herb will be retiring as president at the conclusion of the fiscal year, June 30. His leadership as president of Barclay for the past five years was highlighted in a video presentation. Barclay College Named Business of the Year

The Kiowa County Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet at the Greensburg First United Methodist Church community hall on Saturday Evening, February 20, 2010. Bob Wetmore, Chamber Executive Director, presented the Business of the Year Award. This year’s award was presented to Barclay College, Haviland, for their significant contributions to the Kiowa County region as a member in good standing of the Chamber of Commerce.Trent Jacks, Chairman of the Board for Barclay, accepted the award and thanked those attending for the recognition. Jacks shared that Barclay has significantly increased the number of students attending the college and has recently begun construction of a new residence hall.

New Residence Hall Rising

With phase one of the project nearly complete, the construction of a new parking lot, work on the new residence hall has begun. The new parking lot on the corner of Pratt and Cherry streets is already in use, with minimal finishing touches needed. The sidewalks for Barclay Park should be completed this week. Several areas have been set aside for landscaping, which will be completed later this spring.Work on grading and site preparation for the new residence hall started in late March. The Bears Take Third

Haviland, KS - The Barclay College men's basketball team earned 3rd place in the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA) National Championship on March 3-6 in Oklahoma City. They went into the tournament seeded 5th.In their first game Thursday night, the Bears defeated #4 Free Will Baptist Bible College from Nashville, TN 89-6. ACCA National Champions

Haviland, KS - The Barclay College Lady Bears volleyball team was crowned the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA) National Champions on November 7th after winning the national tournament in Bethany, OK. The Lady Bears were the #1 seed going into the tournament and had to face down five opponents to become the champions.
In their first match the Bears defeated Crowley’s Ridge College from Paragould, AR in 4 sets; 25-20, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13. Later that day they faced Champion Baptist College out of Hot Springs, AR. The Lady Bears defeated Champion in straight sets; 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. To finish out pool-play BC took on Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College out of Moore, OK. In the third meeting of the season between the two teams, Barclay came back from 2 sets down to win 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-12.
In the semifinals the Lady Bears faced conference opponent Calvary Bible College from Kansas City, MO. The two teams split in their previous two meetings, but Barclay came out ahead winning in straight sets; 26-24, 25-17, 28-26.
In the Championship match the Bears again faced a conference team they had split matches with during the regular season, Nebraska Christian College from Bellevue, NE. Barclay won a close first set 25-23 before being defeated in the second by a score of 20-25. They Bears came back in the third and took the win 25-17. NCC wasn’t finished and won the fourth set 17-25. The fifth set was back and forth before Barclay got the 15-12 win.
Junior Renee Gonzales (Andale, KS) was named as the ACCA National Libero of the Year as well as the Tournament MVP, Senior LeAnn Carlson (Haviland, KS) was named an ACCA Academic All-American as well as an Honorable Mention All-American. Freshman Adele Wheeler (Haviland, KS) was also named to the All-Tournament team. The Lady Bears finished the season with an overall record of 15-7.
Full Tuition Scholarship

Barclay College is now offering a FULL TUITION SCHOLARSHIP to all on-campus students. This scholarship is worth over $11,000 per year and is available every year the student is enrolled full-time and lives in the dorm.
The goal of Barclay College is to "... prepare students in a Bible-centered environment for effective Christian life, service and leadership" while at the same time allowing students to graduate from college with little or no debt. The maximum cost for the 2009-2010 school year will only be $8,990 which covers room, board and fees. Because Barclay College is Nationally accredited, students are eligible for Federal financial aid and any outside scholarships which can be applied to lower that cost.
Barclay College is located in Haviland, KS and offers Bachelor degrees in Bible/Theology, Missions, Pastoral Ministry, Psychology/Family Studies, Youth Ministry, Music Ministry, Missions: Bi-vocational, Business Administration and Christian School Elementary Education.
