Top 12 Barclay Events of 2012

As we look forward to a new year it seems fitting to take a moment to reflect on some of the high points of 2012. Barclay College has reason to celebrate. There is an awareness that God continues to pour out His blessings on this institution as it strives to faithfully fulfill its mission. Here are 12 things to celebrate about 2012.

Barclay College added exceptional staff during the 2012 year. Dr. Jim Le Shana joined our administration as V.P. for Academic Services, Derek Brown joined our faculty as the chair of our Pastoral Ministries department, and Cheryl Couch assumed the oversight of our distance learning program (Associate VP for Distance Learning) as well as the chair of the Elementary Education department. Barclay College is already experiencing the impact of these additions to our staff.

- 2. Elementary Education Teacher Certification.
Cheryl Couch lead the efforts of the college to position the elementary education program for completing accreditation for state teacher certification. Barclay College will also complete their accreditation with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). These steps are a fitting recognition of the quality of the Elementary Education Teacher program and its ongoing development over the past few years.

3. BC listed in the Top 10 of tuition free schools
Barclay College is ranked #9 in TheBestSchools.org list of the Best Colleges providing free tuition. Colleges were selected based on the quality of their programs, the types of courses offered, the faculty, awards, rankings, and reputation. Here is a link to our article.
TheBestSchools.org is an independent organization with no ties to any other educational institution. All its editors know the academic world inside out, with some holding Ph.D.'s and having extensive experience in teaching, research, and publishing at the university level.
4. First Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership courses online
Barclay College School of Graduate Studies offered its first master’s degree completely online. The degree is a Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership – Professional Studies. The MATL-PS (Professional Studies) targets those who are serving Christ in the public square. The Master of Arts in Transformational Leadership with a concentration in Professional Studies (MATL-PS) is a 36 credit hour online graduate degree that is academically designed to develop effective twenty-first century professional leaders. The 2012 graduating class members demonstrated an exceptional focus on ministry. Every graduate of Barclay College is prepared to serve in ministry regardless of their professional vocation. However, the 2012 graduating class was notable in that 70% of these graduates, regardless of vocational field, are serving in ministry settings.

6. BB ranked 9th
On Thursday, Dec. 6th, the NCCAA Division II national rankings included the undefeated Bears ranked at ninth in the country. It marks the first time this season the Bears have been ranked in the top ten. The ranking comes off a week where the Bears won at Manhattan Christian, beat then #10 ranked Grace University, and knocked off defending Southwest Region champions Dallas Christian to improve to 6-0 on the season.
7. Gift of Women’s dorm
Barclay College was blessed with a significant donation from an alumnus of the college. During the weekend of the annual Ladies Auxiliary Sale, Barclay College received a gift to pay off the indebtedness on the current women’s dorm. The debt on the woman’s dorm was just over $600,000. With this gift the college reduced its total debt to approximately $450,000.

8. Soccer lights
Barclay College became the first college in the conference to install lighting on its soccer field. This is a welcome addition to the college athletic program as afternoon temperatures during August and September continue to push into the upper 90’s. The lights were installed in time to initiate the first alumni soccer game ‘under the lights.’
9. Fall 2012 record enrollment
The fall enrollment set new records for the college. Total student numbers for the fall were 263. This represents a 300% increase over the last five years.

10. Ladies Auxiliary Sale
One of the most exciting and most significant events on the college calendar is the annual Ladies Auxiliary Sale each October. Alumni from across the country gather on campus for this very special event. At the 2012 same the sale raised an amazing $80,000 for the college. The outpouring of support represented by this amount speaks to the dedication of alumni and friends of the college.
11. Higher Learning Commission submission for regional accreditation
Barclay College submitted a Letter of Intent to Complete Eligibility Filing (on October 31, 2012), and the College submitted the complete Eligibility Filing: Institutional Submission on December 31. A panel will then review the filing, with the possibility of allowing the College to submit a “Letter of Intent to Pursue Candidacy” by the summer of 2013. A “Candidacy Visit” would be in the spring or winter of 2014. Barclay College has held national accreditation since 1975 and is in the process of adding regional accreditation.

12. First business degree online
Barclay College expanded the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration to its online program. Lee Anders (MBA) directs the program. Students interested in completing a degree in Business Administration online with an intentional Christian focus can find information on this website.
